Eighties Music

Eighties music marked the end of 70s disco, with the emergence of such new genres as New Wave, Synthpop, hard rock, heavy metal, glam metal, punk rock and hip hop, along with smooth contemporary R&B and even "Good 'Ol Rock 'n Roll". New cable channel MTV created a whole new platform by marrying music with video, requiring songs to not only sound good but to look good as well. Artists such as Michael Jackson, Madonna, and Duran Duran would flourish in this new format.

Eighties music also saw the advent of the compact disc, hailed as "the most important development in the recorded music industry since the long playing record". Indeed, over 200 million CD units would be sold by the end of the decade, and ultimately causing vinyl LP's to start disappearing from record stores.

By 1980, the youngest Jonesers would be middle teenagers and the oldest would be twenty-somethings. But eighties music still carried the Jonesin theme, as evidenced in such songs as "Sweet Dreams" (Eurythmics, '83), "Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For" (U2,'87), "Eye of the Tiger" (Survivor, '82), "Hungry Like the Wolf" (Duran Duran, '83) and "These Dreams" (Heart, '86).
